Shearwater / Europa Hot Springs

The national compilation groups Shearwater and Europa under one coastal source record. This naming relationship is retained here so the same system is not counted twice.

The best bathhouse on the coast

Shearwater Hot Springs Conservancy — widely known as Europa Hot Springs — protects what many coastal boaters rate the finest soak on the BC coast. The bathhouse was rebuilt in 2008, and the pool itself was blasted out of bedrock and lined with native rock to form smooth-walled tubs.

The water runs crystal clear at around 40 °C. Three springs rise from a horizontal fracture, with the middle one carrying both the hottest water and the greatest flow. Mineral content is moderately high, chiefly sulphate, sodium and bicarbonate.

Deep in Gardner Canal

The conservancy sits on the north side of Alan Reach in Gardner Canal, on the north shore of a small bay between Shearwater Point and Europa Point — roughly 45 km east of Hartley Bay and 65 km south of Kitimat.

It is boat or floatplane access only, and mooring buoys are provided. Gardner Canal is a long fjord, so reaching it is a committing run rather than a casual detour.

A working anchorage as much as a spring

Local boaters and commercial fishermen use the site routinely — for the soak, but also for safe anchorage, picnics and camping. That mixed use is part of its character, and it is why the facilities stay in reasonable repair.

Treat it accordingly: this is a shared resource maintained largely by the people who use it, inside a conservancy. Leave the tub cleaner than you found it.

Opening hours & season

No verified visitor timetable

Access depends on land-manager permission, closures and local conditions. No published timetable should be interpreted as 24-hour access.

All times are local to the spring. Checked 2026-10-01; this is not a live opening-status display. Closure notices override regular hours.

Our take

A coastal research lead for experienced marine travellers. Current facilities and permissions need confirmation before it can receive a firm visitor recommendation.
