Fairmont Hot Springs

Fairmont is a long-established mineral-pool resort in the Columbia Valley, with the Rocky and Purcell mountain landscapes close at hand. It offers a developed bathing experience as part of a larger resort destination.

Canada's highest-volume mineral springs

Fairmont's claim is about volume rather than temperature. The resort in the Columbia Valley is widely described as Canada's largest natural mineral hot springs, with a reported daily flow in excess of 1.2 million gallons of fresh mineral water, and figures above 1.5 million gallons quoted for the volume moving through the pools each day.

The water is odourless. Published composition lists calcium bicarbonate, calcium sulphate, magnesium sulphate and sodium chloride, along with trace dissolved radium. The wide temperature range recorded across historical sampling reflects different sources and sampling points, not the temperature of any one pool.

Drained and refilled nightly

An unusual operating detail: the pools are drained, scrubbed and refilled overnight, so they open on fresh mineral water rather than recirculated and chemically treated water. The continuous high flow-through is what makes that practical.

Access is split between public pools and guest-exclusive areas with different hours and admission rules, and the annual-pass section is listed separately again. Confirm which pools your ticket type actually covers before arriving, and note that spring and autumn maintenance closures occur.

The land of smoking waters

Recorded history reaches back to the early 1800s, when explorers described the area as the "land of smoking waters". Commercial hospitality at the site dates from the early 1900s and has run more or less continuously since.

Natural outflows exist in the surrounding area. These are not authorised bathing areas, and the presence of warm water nearby should not be read as permission to enter it.

Opening hours & season

Public pools: daily 8 am–9 pm. Guest-exclusive pool: 7 am–10 pm.

Guest-exclusive pool is adults-only 9–10 pm. The annual-pass section separately lists 9 am–9 pm; confirm access for your ticket type. Spring and fall maintenance closures may apply.

All times are local to the spring. Checked 2026-10-01; this is not a live opening-status display. Closure notices override regular hours.

Our take

A practical choice for families and travellers who want their soak alongside an established holiday base. Expect maintained pools and resort surroundings rather than an intimate backcountry spring.

Before you go

Review the operator’s current pool access, admission and any accommodation-only areas. Do not assume nearby natural outflows are authorized bathing areas.
