A tufa mound in the Muskwa Ranges

Prophet River Hotsprings Provincial Park protects a hot spring that spouts from a hillside, with a trail running down from it to the Prophet River. Over time the mineral water has built a tufa mound — the same depositional process that produced the far larger mounds at Rabbitkettle in the Northwest Territories.

The park covers about 1.84 square kilometres, roughly 185 hectares, high in the Eastern Muskwa Ranges, and was established on 28 June 1999.

No road, in the Muskwa-Kechika

The park lies in the upper Prophet River, about 60 kilometres west of Alaska Highway 97 and some 250 kilometres northwest of Fort St. John. There is no road access at all: reaching it means hiking, horseback or helicopter.

It forms part of the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area, one of the largest intact wilderness systems in North America, which is the proper context for understanding how remote this is.

Wildlife is the real attraction

The species list here is exceptional: Stone's sheep, moose, caribou, elk, deer, mountain goat, grizzly and black bear, and wolves. For most visitors the wildlife viewing and the scenery outrank the spring itself.

Backcountry camping is allowed on a first-come, first-served basis and there are no facilities whatsoever in the park. Bear-aware practice is mandatory rather than advisable, and anyone coming here should be equipped for genuine self-sufficiency.

Opening hours & season

No verified visitor timetable

Access depends on land-manager permission, closures and local conditions. No published timetable should be interpreted as 24-hour access.

All times are local to the spring. Checked 2026-10-01; this is not a live opening-status display. Closure notices override regular hours.

Our take

A research and expedition interest more than a casual holiday stop. Obtain current park information and a realistic access plan before considering travel.
