A highway soak between two national parks

Canyon Hot Springs sits in Albert Canyon about 35 km east of Revelstoke on the Trans-Canada Highway, in the corridor between Mount Revelstoke and Glacier national parks. That position is the whole proposition: it is the obvious stop for anyone driving Rogers Pass.

The resort operates seasonally, generally May to September, so it is a summer destination rather than a winter one — worth checking before building a shoulder-season trip around it.

A timber-lined pit dug by railway crews

The mineral water here is said to have been found by Canadian Pacific Railway workmen around the turn of the twentieth century. They dug a pit at the springs and lined it with heavy timbers, producing an open-air hot tub that served railway workers, residents and passing visitors for many years.

The modern resort came much later, created in the 1970s, and has operated since as the main soaking stop on this stretch of highway.

Named for Albert Rogers

The village, the gorge, the surrounding peaks and the springs all take their name from Albert Rogers, nephew of Major A. B. Rogers, who made many exploration trips in the area — the family name attached to Rogers Pass itself.

Through the steam era Albert Canyon was a working railway settlement and a "pusher" station where extra locomotives were added for the climb. A small roundhouse was built in 1916, and the place supported a CPR agent, operators, a section gang and staff quarters. Almost none of that remains visible today.

Our take

A sensible seasonal stop when the priority is a pool and a place to stay along a mountain road trip. Check dates before building an itinerary around it.
